Peter: Ehen Master, how often should I forgive someone
who offends me? Seven times? (maybe John was really starting to piss Peter off. He just needed the go ahead 😂)
Master: Nope! not seven times but seventy times seven!

Peter: Uh uh

Master:I will tell you a story……….

Peter: Ehen Master, how often should I forgive someone
who offends me? Seven times? (maybe John was really starting to piss Peter off. He just needed the go ahead 😂)
Master: Nope! not seven times but seventy times seven!

Peter: Uh uh

Master:I will tell you a story……….

The Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him.

(Council meeting)
King: Why do we have this much money still hanging? Get me the account books!
Servant B: Yes your majesty
(places the book of account before the king. The king flips and skims through the pages)
King: (still flipping the pages) I think we are very much in order, most of our debtors have paid up…….. Except….. Why is Servant D still owing this much? He owes me hundreds of millions of Naira and he hasn’t even paid a dime! You all think I run a charity organisation. Get me servant D at once!
Servant: Yes your majesty
(servant walk out)
Elder 1: We apologise your majesty. He keeps complaining that he has no money
Elder 2: Your majesty, this is why we advise that you stop lending so much to these servants, you oblige them too much.
King: Enough! You have the simple duty of ensuring that debtors pay accordingly, you cannot……
(servant is dragged in roughly)
Servant: May your reign be long and prosperous my king
King: you owe me! Over 600 million naira. And you have paid nothing! Nothing at all…..
Servant D: My king…. I am sorry. I tried….
King: Silence! My elders tell me you have no money to pay. I therefore order that you be sold. You, your wife, your children and everything single thing you own be sold to pay your debt.
(Servant D falls flat on the ground wailing and crying. The other servant try to drag him out of the presence of the king)
Servant D: Mercy my king! Mercy! I borrowed the money to save the life of my son who badly needed a heart transplant. My king he is still in the hospital recovering. Be patient with me my king. I will pay all! All of it. I will pay. Just have mercy on me and give me a little more time.
( The King was then filled with pity for the servant)
Elder 3: the King has ordered! take him out and sell him! (other servants start dragging him out
Servant D: Mercy my king! Mercy! I will pay, I swear I will.
King: Wait! Release him. I forgive you and I hereby cancel your debt. Go back to your family in peace
Servant D: Eh? My king (he postrates) thank you my king! Thank you my king, your reign will be long and prosperous. Thank you (start rolling on the floor) I’m free! I’m free! Thank you my king, thank you. I and my family owe you our lives. Thank you my king
King: It is alright, you can go
Servant D: Thank you my king (gets up and wipes his tears) thank you. Reign long and prosper. Thank you my king.
(Walks out of the King’s presence) .
(By the Palace gate, he sees servant F )
Servant D: Hey you! Come here.
Servant F: Boss boss, I greet you o
Servant D: Save your greeting! Where is my one thousand naira you borrowed last month?
Servant F: Ah my brother, I’ve not had money since then o. You know my wife is still sick. Just give me some time, I will pay you
Servant D: Noooo I’m not taking that nonsense! You must pay me today! Now!!
Servant F: (kneels down) please, please. Just give me a little more time. I’ll pay
(servant D grabs him by the throat)
Servant D: pay me now! Hey! Guards come and take this criminal to prison. Make sure he is not released until he has paid back fully. Rubbish!
(servant F is dragged to prison. Meanwhile Servant B watched all that happened and went and reported to the king. The king ordered that servant D be brought before him)
King: (visibly angry and shaken) you evil and wicked servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me! Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant just as I had mercy on you? Guards!!!
Guards: Yes your majesty
King: take him to the prison and torture him severely until he pays his entire debt!
Servant D: I’m sorry my King! I’m soorrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyy!!! (he is dragged out)

Master: That is what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart

Matthew 18:21-35

FORGIVING OTHERS

Forgiving others may seem to be a choice, and in one sense it is a choice, but God has been very clear about forgiveness. He has given us specific direction in numerous Scriptures, all of which can be summed up in just one word — forgive! God’s Word says, “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins” (Mark 11:25). “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven” (Luke 6:37).
God is saying that it is in our own best interest to forgive! He is not talking about what is in the best interest of the person who needs to be forgiven. We are the ones God is trying to protect. We are the ones who receive the most benefit from forgiveness, not the other Person. Forgiving others releases us from anger and allows us to receive the healing we need. God’s love for us is beyond our comprehension. God has not qualified one sin as being more grievous to Him than another and He has not qualified one sin committed against us as warranting forgiveness and another not. For example, God is not saying, “If a person lies to you or steals from you, you should forgive him, but if they abuse you or harm your child, you can hold them in unforgiveness.” He is saying to forgive everyone, always, and do it immediately.
Forgiving others often starts as a decision of surrender-an act of our will. This surrender invites God to begin working in our lives in a deeper level, allowing God to heal us. We simply need to make the choice to be open to forgiveness and reconciliation.
Remember, forgiveness does not justify the deed or the person, it does not provide God’s forgiveness for their actions, because only God can do that. While nothing can undo the past, we can do something about the condition of our own present and future. Forgiving others makes a way for our own healing to begin.
If you are willing to forgive, but you are unsure how, consider the prayer below:

Father God, I need your help and your insights. Today I have gained a better understanding of forgiving others and with your help, I fully forgive from my heart. Just as you have freely forgiven me, I forgive them. Father, I ask you to forgive me for hurting others out of my own hurt and to heal my relationships with others. I pray all of this in Jesus’ precious name and by whom all forgiveness and healing was made possible. Thank you for loving me in ways I’ll never comprehend. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
